The Art program at SIS offers a wide variety of courses in areas such as drawing, painting, creamics and sculpture.
Objectives:
In Prep 1 to 2nd Grade the emphasis is on helping students to make their own
understandable symbols for their concepts, communicate their emotional reaction
to objects and events, arrange visual symbols so the organizational structures are
pleasing, and give proper care and attention to the tools and materials used.
The objectives for 3rd and 4th Grades include the use of appropriate symbols to
describe experience, the ability to represent concepts of ordinary objects and
events that are familiar to them, and the ability to use formal elements such as
color, texture, shape, line and volume.
By 5th and 6th Grades the student should be able to communicate emotional
reactions such as happiness, sadness, and terror, and produce an image that
appears to have a relationship with the emotion the student intended.
In 7th and 8th Grades students are exposed to a large number of new skills and
techniques that build on the previous 9 years of general art work. Art is a required
subject until the end of Middle School.
In High School, Art is offered at all grade levels. In the High School classes
students are required to produce a minimum of 5 pieces of work in at least 3
different media (one of which must be 3-dimensional). Students work at their own
pace in a studio atmosphere.
