Surabaya International School is established as a Yayasan (or Foundation) under Indonesian law. In common with all Yayasans, SIS's governance structure is composed of three boards: the Board of Patrons (BOP), the Board of Management (BOM), and the Board of Supervisors (BOS).
The Board of Patrons is the general policy-making body of the school. The BOP also approves the annual budget, appoints the members of the BOM and the BOS, and appraises the results achieved in light of the aims of the school system. The BOS also plays a role in supervising and advising the BOM.
The Board of Management and the teaching staff are charged with operating the school on a day-to-day basis within the guidelines issued by the BOP. Current members of the BOM include the Superintendent, Elementary Principal, Senior Business Manager, and the Administrative Assistant.
The Board of Patrons has seven members who serve for two-year terms. Under the school's Articles of Association, members of the Board of Patrons are appointed by decision of the BOP. Nominations are solicited from the parent community and any parent or guardian of an SIS student may put themselves forward as a candidate. A parent who is also an employee of the school, or the spouse of a school employee, is not eligible to serve on the BOP.
Meetings of the Board of Patrons are held monthly. Members of the school community are welcome to attend to listen to the proceedings and, with prior notice, to raise issues at a board level. The BOP does have an executive session in which only board members and the BOM participate. This usually follows the open meeting. The executive session is to allow the board to consider confidential issues such as salaries and disciplinary matters.
