SIS offers foreign language instruction in French, Madarin and Bahasa Indonesia.
The Foreign Language Program at SIS is based on the student's need to
grow and interact with a new language on several different levels.
Learning a language is not simply learning to speak and write. Language
is, by its very nature, a social and cultural experience as well. Bahasa
Indonesia takes advantage of the many resources of the host country to
allow students to interact with host nationals.
 | French classes are able to visit the French Culture Center, learn about French communities through books and videos, and when avaible interact with native French speakers. Elementary students are grouped by grade level in Bahasa Indonesia. In Middle School, all languages are offered by grade level so, as a result, students come to foreign language classes with a variety of levels of exposure and fluency. Class lessons are built around this disparity whenever possible, trying to challenge the more advanced students while giving the lower levels the attention they need. |
Strategies for instruction include cloze, choral group responses, songs, conversation, lecture, computer programs and drills, among other things. In High School, students elect a foreign language. An effort is made to group students according to their proficiency of the language: beginner, intermediate and advanced. The High School Program is similar in content to the lower school, but is more rigorous as far as academic expectation is concerned. Writing, speaking, listening and reading are a focus at all levels.
