Ms. Lisa Thom (PYP Coordinator)
I was born and raised in a very small town in British Columbia, Canada. I think growing up in a town without a stoplight filled me with a desire to see the world. I love to travel and have explored many parts of the world. Some of my favourite places to visit are Turkey, Russia, Australia, Jordan and Spain.
I have a Bachelor of Education degree with a Major in History and a Minor in Early Childhood Education from Simon Fraser University in Canada. I am currently completing my Master's Degree in Educational Leadership through The College of New Jersey in the U.S.A. I have been teaching since 1993 - mostly in Canada - although I also taught at international schools in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. and Baku, Azerbaijan prior to coming to SIS.
I have been with the SIS family for two years - first as the Prep 1 teacher, and this year as the PYP Coordinator.
Surabaya International School is a candidate school* for the Primary Years Programme. We are pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy - a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that we believe is important for our students.
My job is to help the elementary teachers strengthen their knowledge of the PYP in order to implement the programme with fidelity. As a member of the school leadership team, I collaborate with teachers and administration to develop a school culture that reflects the qualities of the IB Learner Profile.
*Only schools authorized by the IB organization can offer any of its three academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), or the Diploma Programme. Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted.
